June retail sales top forecasts - Los Angeles Times

Third Street PromenadeEach category of retail sale, including discounters, stores and sellers of clothes, posted June sales gains that exceeded the estimates. Above, shoppers stroll Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. (Arkasha Stevenson, of the Los Angeles Times / July 8, 2011)Retailers beat gloom June last month, surprisingly strong results sales with lower prices of gas, generalized refreshing and warm, leading many buyers to hit summer clothing stores.

With the important season of back to school then on the calendar of the retail, consumer gave merchants the type of the month, they had been hoping a good but not great first half of the year. Combined with the better than expected Thursday labour market data, retail sales report led to a stock market rally and helped raise optimism one day before use U.S. figures were released.

"It was a month very robust." "This is the kind of momentum that retailers to build and deferred back to the school," said Ken Perkins, President of research firm retail Metrics Inc. combined with any other economic trends improve, "" he suggests we will removing a soft patch and it will be a second half stronger economic growth.""

Department store chain has posted an increase of 6.5% year sales, better than the 4.9% than analysts expected, according to the count of the Thomson Reuters of 25 retailers. Each category of retail sale, including discounters, stores and sellers of clothes, displayed the gains that exceeded the estimates.

With retailers offering their deeper cuts of the year so far, many buyers said that they spent more freely in recent weeks.

Leah Herndon, a mother in the home of Pacific Palisades, then buy a bit of a last month shopping, clothing training, shoes, jeans and tops for herself and for her two daughters summer clothing.

"There are just for the sales of many right now that I have had the advantage," Herndon said at the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica Wednesday. "My children and I all stuff desperately need." "I think that we all had our fair share."

Lily Stofman, a student a recent graduate of the USC, pre-medical devalues purchase itself also in June, a new fall wardrobe.

"In recent years, I wasn't shopping for everything, but recently I picked up," said 25 - year - old West Hollywood. "I see gas was $3.83 and I was very excited." It just feels better. »

Performance June reflect a harmonious blend of stores. Club warehouse Costco Wholesale Corp., said sales rose 14%, clothing company Brands Limited posted a 12% gain and retailer teen zumiez Inc., said sales increased by 9.8%.

Luxury retailers are once again a month of standout, with sales up to 12.5% at Neiman Marcus Inc., 11.9% to Saks Inc. and Nordstrom Inc. 7.9%.

"Luxury is strong and will not receive more strong,", said Sherif Mityas, a management consulting firm A.T. Kearney partner. "You really see a large return of luxury buyer and the next lower level, which is the aspiration shopper."

Among the shares of retail Thursday, Corp. Kohl climbed $ 3.69 to $55.78, target Corp. jumped $3.23 at $51.67, Nordstrom acquired 2.08-$ 50.56 and Brands Limited has increased from $1.05 to $40.36.

Monthly results are based on sales in stores open at least a year, known as same-store sales and considered a good barometer of the health of a retailer because it excludes openings and closures.

Analysts noted that they were still waiting to sales at retail to stabilize and strong spending come from all economic levels.

Brian Sozzi Wall Street strategies "trends in retail sales monthly coaster became the standard in this cycle of economic recovery," written in a note to investors. "The recovery of expenditure is far from being uniform."

He said that ""in a feast and famine environment,"retailers will report number sales solid in the weeks prior to specific holidays or when the discounts are deep, which leads to volatility."

Economists say that a decrease in the unemployment of the nation is necessary in order to fuel consumer spending, which represents more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.

On Thursday, the Ministry of labour reported that the number of Americans who made the first time claims for unemployment benefits dropped last week, the lowest level in seven weeks to 418,000. The June unemployment figures will be published Friday.

Retailers are the future of the season to return to school, which begins this month and which is usually the second pilot sale of the year (after the holiday of the year), 16% of annual sales in the industry.

The International Council of Shopping Centers Thursday is expected to increase from the year of 3% to the total of sales for the period of back to school for three months.

It is a modest estimate, and analysts said retailers will have to be done for them.

"Inventories of clearance of goods related to the summer were widely sold through," said Perkins of retail Metrics. "The key question emerges as to what extent the vast majority of consumers in the average to low-income area will be prepared to pay the full price in July".

But retailers may need to offer contracts at the expense of the benefits to attract buyers focus on discounts.

The Third Street Promenade, William Cole, a Culver City television Editor, had "splurged" on a book, but said that it was not shopping for anything else.

"I am very selective on what to buy," he said. "I pick up stuff each time in a while, but I'm looking for sales and I did not easily buy that I used to."

US and sign the agreement - New York Times of trucking Mexico

WASHINGTON - Mexican truckers will be capable of carrying deep goods to the United States and vice versa, under the terms of an agreement signed Wednesday in Mexico City to end a trade dispute of 17 years.

Under the agreement, Mexico will eliminate tariffs on a wide range of agricultural products and American products as soon as the first Mexican truck is allowed to enter the United States, a process that will require permits and approvals. As a preliminary step, these tariffs will be reduced by 50% this weekend.

The United States had refused since 1994 in honour of the condition of the North American free trade agreement allowing trucks to transport goods across the border to a final destination, rather against the Mexico trucks to travel further than 25 miles in the country. After more than ten years of waiting and negotiation, Mexico retaliated by imposing tariffs in 2009.

In March, President Obama and his Mexican counterpart, Felipe Calderon, a preliminary agreement on a compromise. This agreement, signed by the Secretaries of transportation of the two countries, grants truckers free range for a trial period of three years.

Business groups and farmers, who have insisted for the United States the problem, welcomed news of Wednesday as a spur to the economy. But groups representing the truckers to the United States, said that the agreement put their jobs at risk and that security concerns had not been adequately.

Also, they complained that the White House has sought to limit attention to the agreement, no public announcement concerning the signature and agreeing to keep it in a foreign country.

Moody's Portugal Cup rating junk - New York Times

Moody cut its rating the Government long term of the Portugal to a n.p.o. rating from Ba2 to Baa1 links and said that the Outlook is negative, suggesting more downgrades lie in store.

The rating agency cited the risk that Portugal will need a second plan to rescue before she can tap bond markets once again, and that the lenders from the private sector must share the pain.

He also warned that Portugal may not match the financial objectives, it worked with the European Union and the Monetary Fund International under its plan to rescue because the "formidable challenges that the countries face in reducing spending, increase the compliance of tax, economic growth and the support of the banking system."

Rating agency actions are passed to the scene in Europe. Standard & Poor, said Monday that a proposal by French banks to help the Greece to meet its medium-term funding needs would be a de facto default, since banks would be required to roll over loans for a longer term to a lower interest rate. That deflated hopes that the problems of the Greece could be under control soon.

"We continue to work for a possible solution", Michel Pébereau, Chairman of BNP Paribas, the biggest French Bank, said Tuesday to the Conference of Paris Europlace, a rally attended by hundreds of international bankers.

With the Greece effectively bankrupt, French and German banks want to give Athens more time to repay the loans as they come due. But they are having to return to the drawing board, after the Standard & Poor rating agency, said Monday that such a measure would be the equivalent of a defect because the banks should wait longer to be reimbursed and the value of Greek bonds would be reduced.

That deflated hopes that the problems of the Greece could be under control soon. If the proposals do not, work Mr. Pébereau said, "we will come with something else."

French and German bankers were scheduled to meet Wednesday morning at the headquarters of BNP Paribas in Paris with representatives of the Central Bank, under the auspices of the Institute of International Finance, an association of major financial companies of the world, to discuss the way forward, said the people informed of the plan were not allowed to speak publicly.

Banks are to discuss the consequences of the decision of the s. & P. which Greek proposal to refinance the debt, would be a "selective default", as well as what would be a true by default, the people said.

The difference is crucial, because default all the European Central Bank would not able to accept the Greek debt as collateral.

"Everyone here is anxious, said an Executive with the French unit of a major U.S. financial institution, which was not authorized to speak publicly." The world is interconnected. It is not only a problem for the Greece. All banks are nervous and strongly want a solution. »

Investors seek not only to what support financial Greece receives from its European partners and the Monetary Fund Greek International, but also to whether the Greece private creditors could declare losses on their holdings of debt, which would affect the balance sheets of banks. Banks are seeking to obtain clarity on how large any losses can be before they must report quarterly earnings once, near the end of September.

A rival of s. & P., Investors Service of Moody, said Tuesday that banks could have on their existing Greek bonds book losses if they choose to roll over maturing debt.

French bankers had not contacted the rating agencies to know their proposal to refinance the Greek debt to determine whether the agencies would consider such default action. "The French banks have jumped too soon," said a banker involved in the discussions.

Finance Ministers the euro reached an agreement last week to keep the Greek Government operating through the summer, but put off the coast of the question of how to provide a second rescue plan to meet its needs for funding through 2014.

There is broad agreement that a kind of debt relief is necessary, and responsible, especially in Germany and the Netherlands, want banks bear part of the pain of a debt restructuring. The negotiations are complicated by the fact that a declaration of default by rating agencies could cause a dangerous escalation of the crisis.

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, said Tuesday that the views of the I.M.F., the European Central Bank and the European Commission should be given more weight than those of the agencies rating, Associated Press reported from Berlin.

"I hope especially the case of these three institutions," said Ms Merkel.

A sign of how heavy the calculation rescue plans became, Superior Court of the Germany Tuesday heard a suit filed a year by six plaintiffs who argued that the Greece German aid was unlawful under European rule which prevents the u. the Member States to take on the obligations of the Governments.

The case was serious enough that Finance Minister Wolfgang Sch?uble has been arguing that the Government had no choice but to the return of aid for the Greece.

"A common currency cannot do without the solidarity of all members," The Associated Press cited Mr. Sch?uble said.

A spokesman for Hsu Fu Chi, said Monday that the company has been in talks with companies in the United States, in Europe and the Japan to form a partnership that would extend its activities in China, but no agreement has been reached.

"We deny we discuss with Nestlé, because there are already rumours." But we do not want to reveal the names of other companies, "said Christine Sun, spokesperson of Hsu Fu Chi." "For the moment, we have not any concrete agreement." "It is too early to discuss the form of cooperation".

In his comments, however, Ms. Sun did not exclude a sale.

Hsu Fu Chi was founded by four brothers of Taiwan and has been operational since the beginning of the 1990s from southern China. The company makes chocolates, candy and pastries.

Judge says 150 years in prison for Madoff - New York Times

Counsel, Ira Lee Sorkin, listed several reasons, including Mr. Madoff confessed to his sons, knowing that it could be turned into; his "full acceptance" of the responsibility for his crimes; and its efforts to help the recovery of lost property.

Citing data showing Mr. Madoff, who was then 71 years, could expect to live about 13 years, Mr. Sorkin applied for a period of 12 years - "right to an effective life sentence", as he put it-suggesting that Mr. Madoff may be allowed a year of freedom before his death. Mr. Sorkin also proposed another option: 15 to 20 years.

Judge Chin, said that he understood the purpose of Mr. Sorkin. "It's a fair argument that you want to give someone a chance to see the light of day," the judge said in a recent interview, "to" have some hope and something to live.

"And," he added, "who was one of the struggles Madoff.".

Judge Chin said he rejected the idea of a 12 year sentence for Mr. Madoff quickly but thought 20 to 25 years may be acceptable. Finally, he concluded that even that "would have been just too low.

"Ultimately, I just thought it would deserve," he said. "The benefits of him gives hope were far outweighed by other considerations of."

Judge Chin would impose a term of 150 years of Mr. Madoff, perhaps the most striking and widely discussed the sentence in the history of the American crime passes white. In doing so, it seemed to find a way to translate the rage of the society in a number.

Two years later, her memories resurrect anger, shock and confusion that surrounded Mr. Madoff crimes and provide a rare eye blow encountered unbearable pressure by a judge who had for balancing act, the emotion of the public and its own deep convictions while making a sentence which was fair and met the need for the Court to send a message.

Judge Chin have agreed on a series of interviews in a broader look in his sentencings in the Federal District Court in Manhattan, which appear in an article later. "Most of the judges will tell you that sentencing is the most difficult things to do," he said.

Mr. Madoff, who was also interviewed, offered its first comments on the judge and the sentence, which was held two years earlier on Wednesday.

Speaking by telephone from federal prison in Butner, N.C., Mr. Madoff said that he believed that the judge Chin went with "the time mob psychology".

"Explain to me who else received a sentence like that", said Mr. Madoff. "I hear, serial killers get a death sentence, but this is practically what he gave me."

"I am surprised Chin suggests the stoning in public,"he added."".

"Thank you (I Guess).

Judge Chin, 57, said he has learned that he had received the case Madoff for its staff, as he entered his room, March 6, 2009, after a procedure of the Court.

He also received an email that day of Gabriel w. Gorenstein, a judge, magistrate who had reached in the wheel in wood that is used to assign random cases to the courthouse and selected an envelope containing the name of judge Chin.

"Just thought that I would give you the heads up," wrote judge Gorenstein.

"Thank you (I guess) to turn the wheel in my favor." Judge Chin wrote in return.

Judge Chin has also learned that day there would that Mr. Madoff plead guilty to all the 11 counts against him, including fraud, perjury and money laundering.

A few days before the sentencing, clerks and trainees from the Chin j. joined him for their weekly lunch around a large wooden table in his cabinet.

Status: an Android phone which declares that "Google" (New York Times)

But look at the bright side: it has never been a better selection of cell phones really great. In fact, worldwide operating system Google Android phone, new phones seem to fall stack once a week, each hop the last opportunity.

Who put this week is particularly surprising, because Google designed. Not only the software again - the phone itself. Yes, "Google" is painted right on the back with "Samsung" which has been manufacturing. This phone, Nexus S bears little resemblance with for Google's first effort to a phone, a year earlier, the relationship between had failed them. (S. has more in common with Galaxy S of Samsung models).

It is important for a lot of reasons that Google is once again. First of all, it represents the towel on the radical model of selling Google official throwing. He intended to create an online store where you purchased the phone and service, independently. No more "you want an iPhone?" "Then you get AT & T."

Who has never taken. This time, you'll buy S Nexus of Best Buy ($530 no contract, or $200 with a T-Mobile two-year contract).

In General, the new link is essentially the same as his rivals: is a (bigger than the iPhone in each dimension) black rectangle with a multitouch screen, a screen keyboard and a superfast chip makes sense sensitive.

Camera rear panel has a flash LED, but the quality is the only way and can't make hi-def videos. The front facing low resolution camera is intended for video calls or checks for spinach in your teeth. (Video call software comes with the phone, although you can download a couple of little quiches apps at this end of Android app. online store)

4-Inch screen is bright, strong and vibrant. The case is all the plastic, which makes it a magnet for zero and fingerprints as iPhone glass and metal. It is elegant but fairly generic - looking; eccentricity of unique design is a bulge on the bottom of the back, you could argue, will help you to orient the phone when retrieving your pocket.

Samsung also claims that the screen is slightly inclined inwards - curved - to fit your face better. Really? You need a microscope to measure. the curve is almost undetectable. If this minute degree of curvature fits your head, well, you have a skull size of a hot air balloon.

S misses some features the original link, as the dual microphones cancellation (regardless - S great sounds), the trackball has doubled in a light message and the memory card slot. This time, your storage is capped at 16 gigabytes - only 1 gig which is available for storing standard apps downloaded.

Technically, the phone is sold "unlocked", which means that you do not have to use T-Mobile; If you want, you can insert the card account AT & T phone or, when you travel overseas cell carrier. Even then, however, technical limitations prevent you from obtaining on 3 G Internet network AT & T, or T-Mobile 4 G (faster) Internet network.

The most exciting new hardware is S Nexus can read N.F.C. labels. In case you're not an engineer, who is an acronym for near field communication. Supposedly, a day earlier, you can switch your phone on a special tag to pay for something. You can on your phone waves to someone else to share maps of e-business. You can retrieve information, Web links or videos special stickers on billboards and bus shelters, just by scanning your phone.

Ensure. And then you can hop in your hovercraft and fly home.

Unfortunately, it does the tags N.F.C. in America (except in Portland, a test program run by Google), so for the moment, the feature is worthless. Of course, you could argue that if ever the N.F.C., S Nexus will be ready. Unfortunately, at this time, he will examine such as steam powered by kerosene pump.

The most attractive aspect of Nexus perhaps not all hardware - be it is software. Here is pure Android, Google intended way. No cell phone manufacturer has modified, diluted or complicated with its own editorial. It come with preinstalled applications Verizon junkware or what. And this is the first phone with Android 2.3.

This is a big deal. Google updates its software frequently. But if you buy your phone Android cell phone carrier, you will get not updated for months, if ever, because the carrier is the goalkeeper. 2.2 Android, for example, introduces the ability to watch videos Flash on the Web – but so far, many phones Android cannot exploit this functionality because their carriers were not offered the 2.2 update. You won't have this problem if you buy a phone from Google.

Jordan, Chuck Innovative G.M. Designer, dies at 83 (New York Times)

The cause was Lymphoma, his wife, Sally, said.

Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., G.M., Patriarch hired the first Director of the design of a major car manufacturer in 1927 in its plan to introduce new models every year. He has chosen the flamboyant Harley Earl, a confidante of stars of the film, as his friend, Cecil b. DeMille, promoted jodhpurs.

Mr. Jordan was the third successor to Mr. Earl of G.M. Vice President of design, and his daring echoed Mr. Earl. When Mr. Jordan took fin their surreal peak with his Cadillac Eldorado of 1959, he said that he was "let a tiger cage."

Products included designs tractors and trucks, corvettes and Opel, and he has contributed to "broad way" Pontiac, dear muscle cars of the baby boomers. The Aerotrain, 1950s train of the future, G.M. triggered wow fans design, but functioned properly.

Mr. Jordan classic designs included the 1963 Buick Riviera, the Cadillac Eldorado, 1967 and 1973 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. His vision is also simplified as jets that inspired this: more long, low, more broad - and intended to excite.

"We treat design - something intangible and emotional," he said in an interview with Automotive News at the time of his retirement in 1992. "" "" There are no rules or steps of success. It is a matter of opinion. This is not research or engineering to computer programs and hard data.

"Words cannot communicate it exactly." You should see and feel. We deal with emotion. »

Mr. Jordan has struggled to maintain the rule of the designers in the decision-making process of Detroit, engineers, brand managers and market researchers. He hated the focus groups.

"A good designer has not need Mr. and Mrs. Zilch Kansas telling him what to do," he told Motor Trend in 2006.

Mr. Jordan, once called "the last of the large dinosaurs, design" could perceive trends was suggested by the 1959 Eldorado. Jack Telnack was homologous design by Mr. Jordan Ford, told Automotive News in 1992 that that car had shown a feeling of perfect pitch for assurance of the 1950s America.

"We had the resources and the necessary means in this country everything we wanted to do", said Mr. Telnack. "We dressed in this way, we ate in this way, led us to cars in this way, we have experienced everything, and I think that the car has been a true statement where we were in our culture, at the time."

Charles Morrell Jordan was born in Whittier, California, on October 21, 1927, and began to sketch 6 cars. He went to the M.I.T. study engineering and design, and in his second year won the competition model-car body Fisher artisan Guild. The prize was a $4,000 scholarship and a boost to G.M. appealed after the graduation.

He did, and M. hired. He remained for four decades, only interrupted by the Department of the air force at the beginning of the 1950s. One of his first tasks was designing a G.M. truck for the year 1955 model for which he received the patent design.

He loved the creativity of the Design Studio. "You are free to make mistakes, the spill paint, regardless," he told Motor Trend.

One day, some colleagues and made him a mock-up of a car with wheels to all sides, ushering in the era of Pontiac trail scale.

30, Mr. Jordan was appointed to one of the most prestigious G.M. Cadillac principal designer positions. Five years later, in 1962, Life magazine called a "100 most important young men and women in the United States.".

His duties included Germany three years as chief designer for Opel, head of external design and Director of the whole design staff. In 1986, he became Vice President of design, by Mr. Earl old job.

In this position, he helped to restore various distinct identities makes of G.M., leading the design for Chevrolet Pontiac Conquest of the 1990s, as well as the Buick Reatta Camaros team. But it has been criticized for its 1991 Chevrolet caprice was derided as "Shamu the Whale."

Mr. Jordan, who taught the automotive design high school after his retirement G.M., leaving his wife, Sally Irene Mericle; former mourning his son, mark, a car designer noted; his daughters, Debra Bryan and Melissa Hall. four grandsons. two brothers. and a sister.

One of his passions was Ferraris, and that he possessed many over the years, usually the last model. Enzo Ferrari, racing driver and founder of the company, once takes it for a very quick spin through the mountains.

Mr. Jordan was petrified, but later had a second review: "the man who may have been the best day of my life."

Frequent Flier: The cobra is OK. Duck language not so much (NY Times)

When I was in China, I ate duck marinated fried cobra language. Not care for the duck, but the cobra was O.K. was

I tried a few Korea blowfish. Most people know that if she is not prepared properly, it is fatal. But it was a client lunch, and everyone has to eat, so that my colleague and I assumed that we should try. A member of the group we were told that we should stay awake after lunch. I guess that we need to make sure that if we had side effects such as numbness, we would be less able to try to get help.

I didn't know this, but my colleague is one of those guys who can fall asleep in a crowded subway. After we left the customers, we took a taxi back at the hotel. Soon, he began to fall asleep in the cabin. I kept shaking him awake, thinking he was beset by the misery of some blowfish. He leave her alone kept saying. I did not listen. I was worried. But, fortunately, it was good, although a bit angry I ruined his nap rubbing.

Sometimes in an attempt to navigate cultural differences can strain relations with clients.

When I travelled in Malaysia in 1991, I thought I needed to learn more about cultural differences. I was on a lift with two Malaysian and we headed to the ground floor. I am a polite person and if a woman is located on an elevator with me I am going to leave his first release. This is what I decided to do this when we arrived at our floor.

The doors open, and the women do move. I have just standing there waiting for them. Then the doors closed and we headed back. When we headed back, I left. Then the women descended. I learned later that it was a cultural custom man walk in advance.

Now, I make a point of reading as much as possible about the local culture to acquire a better understanding of customs. One of the things that I learned was that in Asia you never point to someone with your finger as this gesture is a way of projecting evil. But I suppose I missed the chapter on why you did write Korea red.

Engineers always have a large number of markers of different colours. When you're in a meeting, an engineer can use blue, green, another to tag a plan of action. In this way we can see which suggests that. It's simple and it works.

I was at a meeting with some Korean clients, and I had a red marker in my hand to make some corrections to a plan of action. It was an incredible project, and the meeting went well until I used my red marker to write the name of one of the Korean guys I've met. The room is very quiet, and everyone looked at me completely stunned.

A customer had pity on me and whispered that in writing the name of a person living in red is a bad idea. Apparently, in Korean culture red is used to record the name of a deceased person. Given that my client was alive, I was wishing him dead.

It is very embarrassing, and I apologized as much as I possibly could. Fortunately, the gentleman was understanding. We did not lose the job, and I have gained a greater appreciation and understanding of their culture. I am sure that I've also later threw the red marker.
